If you have to report a homeowner loss today are you
prepared? Most people are not. When you have a loss you are required to list the items
that were stolen or destroyed. This can be a very labor intensive chore if you are not
prepared!
We suggest you make a home inventory to
prepare yourself and your family for a loss. If you have access to a video camera we
suggest videotaping each room of your house and its contents. You can read important
information like serial numbers and model information as you are taping. Once you have a
tape it is important to keep it up to date and to store it at another location such as a
safety deposit box, a relative or a friends house. Never keep the tape at home even in a
safe. If your house is destroyed then your inventory would be destroyed along with it. If
the tape is in a safe the heat from the fire could still damage the tape.
If you do not have access to a video camera
you can fill out a paper copy of your home's inventory. This may take some time to
do, but it will be well worth it in the event you have a loss.
